Ronald McDowell Extends History Through Art

Ronald McDowell extends history through art is an accurate headline.

Seeking to balance the storyline projected by artwork that glorifies slavery and Jim Crow era attitudes, Jefferson County Commissioners have commissioned Tuskegee-based Ronald McDowell to create new artwork that depicts the diversity that exists in their community today.

This story has been reported extensively by news media in Birmingham.

Dr. McDowell submitted preliminary drawings that center on the law, depicting two versions of Lady Justice-one white and one black along with indiscernible images of judges representing diverse ethnicities, gavels and law books. The Jefferson County seal is also embedded in the artwork.

The new artwork will be completed around mid-April 2018.
