Y?BAM Friends of Fannie March

After the acquittal of a law enforcement official in the shooting of Mike Brown as well as other unjust acquittals, Younge Black Artists Movement (YBAM)  arranged a 2014 sit-in at Walmart in protest of the decision.
Javanna Plummer is YBAM’s current president. She has infused a spirit of activism  in her leadership of the organization.
During her first year as YBAM’s president, she and the organization put on events such as a natural hair show, Black Expo, a voting rights forum and more in subtle protest. This year, following the decision of the Trump administration to repeal DACA, ban Muslims from entering the country,  ban transgendered people from serving in the army, as well as Donald Trump’s unfounded condemnation of Colin Kaepernick for Kaepernick’s outspokenness against police brutality, Javanna decided to organize this march.
As that decision was made, Javanna found out that October 6th is the 100th birthday of Fannie Lou Hamer and there is a movement dubbed “Fannie’s Army,” which calls supporters to march in honor of Fannie. In lieu of that, Javanna decided that this would be an ideal time to have the march that was already planned to not only honor Fannie Lou Hamer but to also carry on that spirit of activism.
